Allowing work zone staging changes (making the changes of the work zone traffic control setup) at night on high-volume, urban freeways
Illinois performs some work zone traffic control changes at night. On high-volume projects, if volumes drop considerably at night the DOT would consider performing changes at night. Short-term road closures and traffic signal turn-ons could be performed at night, early morning, or weekends if traffic counts show that patterns are more favorable at those times. This would be done on a project-by-project basis.
Benefits would be less traffic to contend with.
The major concern with night work is the rise in impaired drivers, driver fatigue, and less visibility.
