900 Workers Mourned at Road Safety Kickoff

There are nearly 900 names of men and women killed in roadway work zone accidents on the memorial. Twenty-seven of them are Michigan Department of Transportation employees who were killed dating back about 45 years. It does not list motorists and private contractors. There were 115 total fatalities in Michigan roadway work zones from 1997 to 2003. The memorial was at the Capitol on Thursday in conjunction with the start of the annual “Give ’em a Brake” campaign to promote safe driving in work zones.
