Development of Work Zone Lighting Standards for Nighttime Highway Work

The results of a study to develop illumination guidelines for nighttime highway work are presented. Nighttime highway construction activities were identified and the seeing-task visual requirements for work activities were determined. Suggested illumination levels and lighting configurations were developed. In addition, hazard glare-control countermeasures were developed. A limited field demonstration of the suggested guidelines was conducted and the results are presented.
