Transportation Construction Workers Need Protection, ARTBA Reminds Safety Summit
Author/Presenter: Schneidawind, JohnAbstract:
At U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) Summit on Pedestrian Safety, ARTBA Senior Vice President of Safety and Education Brad Sant told the attendees that federal officials should address transportation construction workers as they focus on the rising tide of pedestrian fatalities on the nation’s roadways. Currently the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the U.S. Department of Labor’s (U.S. DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) do not track worker fatalities separately and there is little data to support industry requests to increase protections. Sant made recommendations for U.S. transportation and labor departments to work together to align their data sets so U.S. DOT can better understand the risks to road workers for better positive protective measures.
