Allowing work zone staging changes (making the changes of the work zone traffic control setup) at night on high-volume, urban freeways
Ohio DOT, depending on the capacity on certain sections of freeways and expressways, sometimes allows work only at night to reduce motorist delays.
ODOT has developed a “Permitted Lane Closure Map” with every section of the state’s freeways and expressways showing the number of lanes and how many of the lanes can be closed without exceeding the allowable length of backup during a set time period. The policy went into effect in 2000 and applies to contract work as well as DOT maintenance operations.
“The American Association of State Transportation and Highway Officials has named ODOT winner of the 2002 President’s Transportation Award for its outstanding efforts to make work zones safer and more convenient for motorists.” This capture is from ODOT’s web page, which provides additional information about the work zone policy.
ODOT plans to place the “Permitted Lane Closure Map” on its web site so contractors can access the latest information.
Since they do a lot of night work, Ohio contractors have become accustomed to scheduling crews at night. Therefore, they have not seen an appreciable increase in the cost for night work.
