Certification and Accreditation

Qualifying to perform a certain job or task, such as flagging or spotting, often requires proof that you have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Certification and certificate programs can provide this evidence and many times are part of a job application process.

ATSSA

The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) provides a variety of certification programs for road, traffic and highway professionals. Visit the ATSSA website to apply.

ARTBA

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) provides two safety certificate programs designed especially for roadway construction: Safe Backing & Spotting, and Safety Certificate for Transportation Project Professionals.

NSC

Based on Federal Highway Administration Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) guidelines and American National Standards Institute requirements, National Safety Council (NSC) courses provide hands-on activities that help individuals do their job safely. NSC offers training options nationwide for Flaggers and Flagger Instructors, Work Zone Technicians, and Work Zone Supervisors.

OSHA

OSHA authorizes Outreach trainers to conduct occupational safety and health awareness training through the OSHA Outreach Training Program. Check out OSHA Frequently Asked Questions: Training and Certifications page for details.
