Center lane closure
In many instances Washington shoulder widths and pavement depths do not allow shifting a full lane of traffic onto them, so WSDOT probably couldn’t accomodate the plan as shown (S&P2956-1.pdf and S&P2956-2.pdf) without temporary widening. Many of the state’s roadways also have shoulder rumble strips so shifting of traffic over the rumble strips can be problematic if not filled in as first order of work. Center island work areas are strongly discouraged also and they do not allow them unless there is no other alternative. It is also recommended that whenever possible include a lateral buffer space between the work operation and live traffic.
