Design and oversight of work zone operations

Design: MDOT develops detailed drawings of typical sign applications for work zone scenarios. The drawings are based on the MUTCD and developed by an interdisciplinary team of design, maintenance, FHWA, and construction staff.
Construction: Contractors prepare project-specific work zone signing plans for Project Manager approval. Field project staff monitor in-place work zone signing. Plans may be adjusted to better suit field conditions.
Work zone signing plans are to be reviewed and approved, but the approval entity (Project Manager, District Traffic Engineer, District Maintenance staff) may be different depending on what work (road construction, utility work, surveying, research) is being performed.
