International Road Dynamics:Dynamic Lane Merger System

IRD developed a system to promote smooth traffic flow leading into a road work zone by creating a dynamic no passing zone near the construction site. The system typically consists of four or five trailer-mounted units that can be deployed on the road shoulder approaching the work zone area. Traffic sensors detect the volumes and speeds at each monitoring site and relay a signal to an upstream unit when congestion is detected. Flashing beacons on the upstream sign are activated when the signal is received to create a no passing zone. The system is fully portable, allowing it to move easily with the advancement of construction and to be redeployed at other construction sites. It has been credited with helping improve safety in and around road work zones.
