Use of flashing stop/slow paddle

Iowa has improved highway work zone safety by outfitting its work crews with flashing stop/slow paddles. Iowa DOT purchased 75 flashing stop/slow paddles and distributed them to flaggers throughout the state. In 1994 and 1995, surveys conducted of maintenance workers and motorists showed positive responses.

Assessment:

Iowa DOT concluded that the flashing stop/slow paddle significantly improves work zone safety. The brand of paddle tested costs more than the standard paddle, but the IADOT believes it will save money by reducing the number of traffic-related worker inju
