Lane lines in work zones
For standard applications, Iowa DOT’s typical lane line width is 4 inches.
In work zones, IDOT uses 8 inch wide lines in shift and merge areas.
The decision to implement wider lane lines is based on field evaluation and initial success in Iowa to implement wider lane lines.
No evaluation was completed. Only a subjective review by safety staff.
IDOT plans to continue to use wider lane lines in work zones. IDOT uses wider lines for lane lines and edge lines in merge and shift areas. A solid lane line is used in these areas to provide a better level of marking through hard-to-maneuver locations.
