Personal protective equipment requirements

Virginia DOT requires its employees to wear:
Hard hats – Whenever an employee is out of the vehicle.
Safety glasses – When working around tools which could produce hazards to the eyes.
Safety shoes – Certain classifications of employees are required to wear safety shoes all the time due to the nature of their work activities. Refer to the Safety Footwear Policy.
Safety vests – Whenever an employee is out of the vehicle, an ANSI 107-2004 standard performance for Class 2 risk exposure high visibility safety apparel shall be worn. Flaggers at night (30 minutes prior to sunset to 30 minutes after sunrise) shall wear ANSI 107-2004 standard performance for Class 3 risk exposure high visibility safety apparel.
