Requirements for work or shadow vehicles to have Truck-Mounted Attenuator (TMA)
Minnesota DOT does not require the use of truck-mounted attenuator (TMA) equipped vehicles for the installation of temporary traffic control devices. However, Mn/DOT sometimes uses mobile lane closures to assist in setting up stationary lane closures. Mn/DOT uses TMA equipped vehicles for all traffic control vehicles for moving and mobile operations on all multilane high-speed highways and many times on two lane two way highways.
Mn/DOT does not require the work vehicle to be equipped with a TMA. All moving striping operations require the use of TMAs on the shadow vehicle(s). All Mn/DOT owned and operated paint (epoxy) stripers are equipped with TMAs. If the striper is not equipped with a TMA they are required to have an additional shadow vehicle which is TMA equipped follow the striper.
