Use of “Saddle drums”/“Saddlemarker”

Illinois DOT used “Saddlemarker” devices as a part of a major freeway reconstruction project on I-270 northeast of the St. Louis metropolitan area.
On this project, the devices were placed at 250′ centers, with reflectors at 50′ centers, top and side. This distance proved to be too far apart. Devices are now installed at 100′ centers with a side reflector, and reflectors installed on the top and side between each of these devices at 50′ spacing. This works very well.
IDOT was satisfied with the performance of the devices. “Saddlemarker” appears to provide additional day and night delineation of the wall. The markers are easy to maintain. In the first contract, the department retained ownership of these devices and intended to place them at locations that would benefit from added barrier wall delineation.

State/Agency: Illinois
Topics: Delineators; Drums
