Application of types of temporary/removable pavement marking material and special linestriping material

The Texas DOT allows a variety of pavement marking materials to be used in work zones on a temporary basis. These are typically determined by the designing engineer to match the characteristics of a given location, such as the type of pavement, expected duration of need for the stripe, and requirements for removal.
Thermoplastic stripe is desired when non-removable products are used for long-term work zones, but water-based paint and beads are allowed when specified on plans.
A number of prefabricated pavement marking tapes are approved for use as removable markings as well as the use of raised pavement markers and traffic buttons to simulate longitudinal markings.
Raised pavement markers are allowed to be placed on top of prefabricated pavement markings as supplemental guidance and to improve wet night visibility.
Temporary flexible-reflective road marker tabs are allowed but are limited to durations less than 14 days.
