Traffic control for volunteer litter pickup crews
Ohio requires volunteer groups to follow the MUTCD or OMUTCD standards. Once a group adopts a section of roadway, they contact the county garage before picking up litter. Typically, the county garage drops off a “Road Work Ahead” sign the appropriate distance before the beginning of each end of the adopted section. Some locations give the groups traffic control signs and inform them how far in advance of the adoption site the signs are to be placed. The state requires volunteers to wear safety vests, sign release forms, read safety information, and watch a safety video.
