Traffic management techniques (beyond the MUTCD) used to reduce delay in work zones
On major metropolitan projects, Minnesota has used the SMART WORKZONE. A portable system of cameras and changeable message signs connected to a command center monitors traffic congestion (using AUTOSCOPE) in real time then transmits appropriate messages to motorists via the message signs. Traffic can be alerted to slowdowns, etc. and advised of alternate routes. This system replaces the traffic management cameras that have been removed due to construction.
