Use of automated flaggers in work zones
Ohio DOT has used automated flaggers in rural maintenance zones and found them to be very effective in controlling traffic. The specific type of automated flagger is not approved by FHWA and is not in conformance with the MUTCD, so ODOT discontinued use. There are no ODOT established policy/guidelines on the use of automated flaggers in work zones.
The type of automated flaggers used was RC FLAGMEN. ODOT created a report on a CD with videoclips to document the effectiveness of automated flagger as a traffic control device. The system was originally used for a research project that is now completed.
