Work zone implementation of intelligent transportation systems

Iowa implemented a pilot project of “smart work zone” on IH-80, using highway advisory radio, detector unit, and 2 solar-powered video cameras on each detector unit. Project sent real-time images refreshed every 1-3 seconds to project manager’s desktop. Project also called for detectors to change the message on changeable message signs to reflect traffic conditions. This project has ended, but personnel are still using the video cameras in interstate construction projects and are pleased with them.

Assessment:

They considered highway advisory radio system to be a success. Use of video cameras on detection units also worked well for them. The detector units themselves were a disappointment because they had a major glitch; they would "lock up" if traffic cleare
