Work zone speed enforcement and photo enforcement in work zones
Comprehensive work zone speed enforcement operational plan developed by the South Dakota DOT, Associated General Contractors Association, and the Highway Patrol. The program utilizes local law enforcement officers and double fines for speeding violations in work zones.
In addition, two laser/cam (video) speed detection units will also be used with this program. The laser radar speed detection gun will be used by officers in speed detection and enforcement. The combination laser/video will be used in speed detection and vehicle identifications by traffic engineers who are certified in the operation of this equipment. They will be recording vehicles and license plates of violators on videotape and sending a picture of the vehicle, date, location, and speed along with a warning ticket for speeding to the registered car owner.
Assessment:
After seven weeks into the program, more than 260 speeding citations were issued with fines ranging from $53 to $173.
