Work zone speed limit
Utah allows the project engineer to reduce the speed limit 10 mph at his/her discretion. Further reduction has to be approved by the region traffic engineer. This policy is presently under review. Some problems have been experienced with inappropriate speed reductions and the length of of speed reduction zones. Contractors will typically post the entire length of a project at the reduced speed even if work is impacting traffic only in a limited area. The standard is to reduce the speed during impacted times and in impacted areas, but this has been very hard to enforce.
The same speed reduction rules apply to all roadway types.
Static signing is used to communicate speed changes to motorists in most cases. Signs are required to be covered if not applicable.
