9-Year-Old Helps Steer Highway Safety
Author/Presenter: White, KineaAbstract:
9-year-old Justice Allen recently won first-place in the N.C. Department of Transportation safety work zone poster contest. In an effort to get more students interested in work zone safety, Carolina’s Associated General Contractors and DOT decided to hold the poster contest for schools across the state in August. Allen, who competed in the 5-to-9 age category, won $100. Contestants were asked to design a poster exhibiting all the safety elements that could be found in a work zone. On Allen’s poster, men are depicted wearing orange safety hats. Some crews are shown working on a bypass overlooking the highway. Safety signs and orange cones alert drivers of construction ahead.
