A Call for Safety in Work Zones by Wisconsin Department of Transportation

Author/Presenter: James , Morgan
Abstract:

Wisconsin officials are intensifying efforts to improve work zone safety following four fatalities reported this year. At a press conference in Superior, the Department of Safety emphasized driver awareness and shared safety tips, highlighting the risks faced by roadside workers like Rhawnie Britton, who survived a crash while on duty. In addition to increased signage, barriers, and protective vehicles, Wisconsin has launched workzonesafe.com, a free online program designed to educate young drivers on navigating work zones. With more than 2,500 participants so far, the program offers practical lessons, emotional storytelling, and a chance to earn a $500 scholarship. State leaders hope these initiatives will reduce the more than 2,000 crashes recorded annually in Wisconsin work zones.
