ADOT Testing Smart Work Zone Along I-40 to Make Work Zones Safer for Everyone: Agency looking to get real-time info to drivers, smooth merging

Abstract:

In order to increase safety and mobility in highway work zones, the Arizona Department of Transportation is studying a dynamic merge system, a specific type of smart work zone, at an existing I-40 bridge project located between Flagstaff and Winslow. The dynamic merge system is designed to mitigate the potential hazards of lane closures by altering the time to merge based on the current level of traffic.
