Arkansas to Use Cameras in Work Zones to Detect Handheld Phone Use
Author/Presenter: Kwilecki, BryantAbstract:
The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), in partnership with the Arkansas Highway Police (AHP), is introducing new work zone camera technology to detect drivers using handheld mobile devices in construction zones. The cameras, originally installed to monitor speeding, will now capture images of drivers holding phones and send them to nearby officers who can stop violators as they exit the work zone. The initiative aims to improve safety for road workers and motorists by addressing distracted driving, which is difficult to enforce under existing hands-free laws. The cameras will rotate among work zones statewide, with advance warning signs for drivers. Officials emphasize that images are used only for immediate enforcement, are not stored unless tied to a citation or warning, and that officers must be present to issue penalties. The program’s primary goal is to deter distracted driving and enhance safety in highway construction areas.
