Autonomous Truck Mounted Attenuator (ATMA) Toolkit
Abstract:The Colorado Department of Transportation Autonomous Truck Mounted Attenuator (ATMA) Toolkit is a practitioner-oriented guidance document that provides comprehensive direction for planning, testing, and implementing ATMA technology in roadway maintenance operations. The toolkit outlines system concepts, operational requirements, and deployment considerations for leader–follower automated vehicles designed to enhance work zone safety by removing workers from high-risk roles. It includes recommended test procedures, performance evaluation metrics, data collection methods, and reporting practices to assess system reliability under various conditions. By compiling best practices, lessons learned, and standardized evaluation approaches, the document serves as a resource for transportation agencies seeking to safely and effectively deploy ATMA technology.
