Busy Year for Iowa Road Construction Nears End with ‘Way Too Many’ Deaths in Work Zones

Author/Presenter: Petroski, William
Abstract:

10 people were killed  in work zone crashes in Iowa this year and 13, last year.  DOT officials said the problem behind the higher number of work zone fatalities is a combination of more road and bridge projects along with more miles driven by motorists.  Speeding and texting while driving are contributing factors. Officials have been working to combat work zone crashes with tougher laws, extra enforcement, and other safety measures such as electronic speed sensors, traffic sensors, and electronic message boards to warn motorists of problems ahead.
