Connecticut Salutes First CTDOT Maintainer Apprentices
Abstract:Several Connecticut agencies have partnered with the Connecticut Employees Union Independent (CEUI) to launch the state’s first registered apprenticeship program leading directly to transportation maintainer positions with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT). The inaugural class of nine apprentices completed more than 2,000 hours of combined classroom and on-the-job training over 12 months, earning commercial driver licenses and transitioning into full-time roles performing essential highway maintenance, including snow removal, construction support, and landscaping. State leaders, including Governor Ned Lamont, hailed the initiative as an innovative workforce development model that strengthens public service career pathways while ensuring a skilled workforce to maintain Connecticut’s transportation infrastructure. The program reflects a broader commitment to registered apprenticeships as a proven strategy for sustainable workforce development across the state.
