Cost Benefit: Wichita Eases Workzone Congestion

Abstract:

Delays in work zones have caused about 10% of highway congestion in the US. The lack of accessible real-time traffic information to help motorists is a major contributor. One effective solution is the ITS-based smart work zone (SWZ). Wichita, Kansas, has recently implemented three of these. Achieving higher diversion rates by giving drivers information that was not only accurate but practically actionable at critical points in advance of the work zones has helped to make traffic flow more efficient around work zones and ultimately saved roadway users delay costs.
