Focus on Driver Deaths in Work Zone Awareness Week
Author/Presenter: Kuennen, TomAbstract:
This spring the third annual National Work Zone Awareness Week brought focus to the dangers of highway work zones, and that the zones represent a greater danger to drivers than to workers. A National Work Zone Memorial was unveiled which contains the names of persons killed in work zones. The number of people killed in motor vehicle crashes in work zones increased from 789 in 1995 to an all-time high of 1,093 in 2000. It is necesary to go beyond traditional approaches to improve both safety and mobility in work zones.
