Full Road Closure for Work Zone Operations: A Case Study – Using Weekend Closures to Expedite Road Rehabilitation and Minimize the Impacts on Motorists and Road Builders
Abstract:Use of the full closure method on I-84 was an innovative idea that was deemed to be a success. With the availability of many alternate routes, signal timing changes on the alternate routes, a large-scale public outreach effort, and the communication between agencies, ODOT’s use of full closure on I-84 resulted in timely completion of the poroject with increased quality and reduced risk for workers and motorists, full road closure is one potential method that can achieve both goals. With adequate planning, public outreach, stakeholder involvement, and alternate routes, full road closure ha the potential to simultaneously accelerate projects, improve quality and safety, and reduce costs.
