German Highways Safer Thanks to Construction Site Warnings

Author/Presenter: Borras, Kevin
Abstract:

Kapsch TrafficCom and Autobahn GmbH have completed the first phase of a major Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) project aimed at enhancing motorway safety in Germany. As part of Europe’s largest C-ITS initiative, 1,000 ITS Roadside Stations have been installed on mobile barrier panels across 8,600 km of highway to warn approaching drivers of construction zones, reducing accident risk. The system integrates with Autobahn GmbH’s backend and the National Access Point (Mobilithek) for broader data sharing. With hardware installation and initial operations now complete, future project phases will introduce additional cooperative safety services.
