Guidelines for Use of Extra-Enforcement in Iowa Department of Transportation Work Zones

Abstract:

This document provide comprehensive directives for implementing additional law enforcement measures to enhance safety in both construction and maintenance work zones. The document outlines criteria for determining when extra enforcement is necessary, such as high-speed traffic areas lacking positive protection, complex traffic pattern changes, nighttime operations, and locations with a history of congestion or incidents. It details enforcement strategies, including stationary and circulating patrols, aerial observation, and media campaigns to raise public awareness. The guidelines also specify procedures for requesting enforcement support, communication protocols between DOT staff and law enforcement, and reimbursement processes for associated costs. By adhering to these guidelines, the Iowa DOT aims to improve safety for both workers and road users in work zones.
