Highway Maintenance Safety

Abstract:

A Safety Committee has been established by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to examine safety issues and suggest improvements for Wisconsin state highway maintenance operations. The committee has produced an outreach video to educate drivers on safe driving practices in work zones. Use of truck conspicuity tape for maintenance vehicles working at night has also been implemented. The committee will also test use of a changeable message sign (CMS) which alerts drivers who are speeding in work zones. Other devices the committee has implemented include: truck mounted attenuators (TMAs), directional barricades, flashing stop/slow paddles, and water-filled barriers.
