Indiana Lane Merge System

Abstract:

The Indiana Lane Merge (ILM) System is a new tool that was developed to remedy the safety and efficiency problems created by closing a lane on an interstate highway. The main problem addressed is a higher frequency of right angle and rear end collisions caused by last minute merging maneuvers near the taper. Another problem addressed is an increase in “road rage” by motorists who become aggressive after being passed by impolite motorists trying to gain a small, unfair position advantage in the traffic stream.
