INDOT to Launch Camera Speed-Enforcement Pilot for Highway Construction Zones

Abstract:

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will launch a pilot program for camera-based speed limit enforcement in highway construction zones starting August 14. This initiative, authorized by House Enrolled Act 1015, targets vehicles speeding 11 miles per hour or more over the limit. With over 8,000 work zone crashes reported in 2023, INDOT aims to enhance safety for both drivers and construction workers by reducing speeding through automated systems. The pilot, beginning in Hancock County’s Interstate 70 zone, will initially issue courtesy notices before enforcing fines for repeat violations. The program will operate under strict data privacy guidelines, focusing solely on traffic safety without broader surveillance.
