Kentucky Using Automated Speed Enforcement Devices
Abstract:The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has begun installing the state’s first automated speed enforcement devices in active highway work zones as part of a statewide safety initiative authorized by House Bill 664, the Jared Lee Helton Act. Although the devices will initially remain inactive to help drivers acclimate, enforcement is expected to begin in mid to late October. Cameras will be deployed in multiple work zones, including sites in Fayette County and Corbin, with clear signage and flashing lights to alert motorists. Enforcement will be carried out by the Kentucky State Police, with fines of up to $500 when workers are present. State officials and industry leaders emphasize that the program aims to reduce preventable crashes, protect road workers, and honor those lost to work zone incidents.
