KY Adding Traffic Cameras to Construction Zones to Deter Speeders. What to Know

Author/Presenter: Leach, Christopher
Abstract:

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced a new initiative to enhance safety in highway work zones by deploying automated speed enforcement cameras. Equipped with radar and photographic technology, the cameras will flag drivers exceeding the limit by 10 mph or more, with violations referred to on-site police officers for in-person citations starting at $500. At least four cameras, including one in Lexington, are expected to be installed in 2025, with warning signs alerting motorists. Officials stress the goal is deterrence rather than ticketing, citing over 1,200 work zone crashes in 2024 that caused seven deaths and nearly 300 injuries.
