Major Signalised Intersection Construction Traffic Management
Author/Presenter: Bilton, PeterAbstract:
This paper provides an overview of the challenges faced managing traffic during the construction of major signalised intersections. The paper provides lessons learned from the Mains+Kessels project that may apply to similar project environments. The project involved the grade separation of Kessels Road (a major heavy vehicle route) and Mains Road (a major public transport route) while maintaining capacity and safety at one of the busiest signalised intersections in Brisbane. This paper is therefore written to assist those involved in the design, planning, procurement and implementation of similar intersection upgrades or maintenance works at major signalised intersections by outlining issues that should be considered at various stages of planning, preparing and implementing major traffic switches. While this paper uses issues, examples and photos from the Mains+Kessels project, these are generally applicable to all major signalised intersection traffic switches.
