Missouri DOT Experiencing Surge in Work Zone Crashes

Abstract:

Missouri Department of Transportation is dealing with a surge in work zone crashes despite decreased traffic volumes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The agency has already had 39 truck/trailer-mounted attenuators hit in work zones this year, compared to 19 hits during the same time period in 2019. Distracted driving has been recognized as a major factor in work zone crashes. To protect highway workers and emergency responders, the state passed the Slow Down and Move Over law in 2012 and Lyndon’s Law in 2019.
