More Than 63,500 Oklahoma Teens Take Part in First Year of Work Zone Safe Safety Course Law
Abstract:Oklahoma marks one year since becoming the first state to mandate work zone and first responder safety training for teen drivers. Effective November 1, 2023, all drivers under 18 must complete the free Oklahoma Work Zone Safe online course to obtain their intermediate driver license. Over 63,500 teens have completed the course, which emphasizes safe driving in work zones and understanding the role of first responders. This initiative addresses rising teen driver-related incidents and honors the 72 Oklahoma Department of Transportation and Turnpike Authority employees who have lost their lives on duty. Beyond the online course, an in-person program offers hands-on training with direct input from highway workers. Teens completing the course can qualify for scholarships and insurance discounts, setting a national example for driver education.
