New App Helps the Visually Impaired Navigate Work Zones

Author/Presenter: Turtinen, Melissa
Abstract:

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has funded a University of Minnesota research to develop a smartphone application that will help the visually impaired pedestrians navigate through construction zones.   The app uses GPS and Bluetooth technologies to detect work zones and send an audible message to guide the user regarding how and when to cross the intersections safely.
