New Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Issued
Abstract:The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has released the 11th edition of the “Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices” (MUTCD), effective from January 18, 2024. Clocking in at over 1,000 pages and last updated in 2009, the manual serves as the national standard for traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg highlights the significance of the update in enhancing road safety and embracing new technologies. The new MUTCD gives greater consideration to all road users and includes an entirely new part devoted to autonomous vehicles. FHWA emphasizes that the guidebook’s scope is limited to traffic control devices and does not serve as a roadway design manual. The agency plans to engage stakeholders through public webinars, online videos, and outreach opportunities to facilitate the implementation of the latest MUTCD updates.
