Ohio Department of Transportation Says Zipper Merge Works; Drivers Annoyed

Author/Presenter: Coller, Patty
Abstract:

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) advocates for the use of the zipper merge during construction zones where lanes are ending, contrary to common driver behavior of merging early. According to ODOT, the zipper merge, where drivers use both lanes until the merge point and then alternate entry into the open lane, significantly reduces congestion and shortens traffic backups. This method, supported by the Federal Highway Administration, prevents unsafe driving behaviors associated with early merging. ODOT emphasizes the importance of public education on the benefits of the zipper merge and has implemented signage since 2021 to instruct drivers on its proper use.
