Oklahoma DOT Commemorates Work Zone Safety Law Progress
Abstract:Oklahoma celebrated the success of its groundbreaking law requiring work zone and first responder safety training for teen drivers, implemented in 2023. To date, over 63,500 teens have completed the Work Zone Safe course, which emphasizes safe driving practices in work zones and respect for first responders. With 72 lives lost in the line of duty by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Turnpike Authority, this program aims to prevent further tragedies. Teens aged 15-18 must complete the online course to earn their intermediate driver license and can benefit from scholarships and insurance discounts. The initiative also includes an in-person component that offers hands-on training and interaction with highway workers. Other states, inspired by Oklahoma’s example, are beginning to implement similar programs.
