Oklahoma DOT Marks Year-One of Teen Driver Course
Abstract:The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) recently celebrated the one-year milestone of its “Work Zone Safe” safety training course for teenage drivers, a mandatory program implemented on November 1, 2023. The initiative, designed in collaboration with various state agencies, requires Oklahoman teens under 18 to complete a free online course focused on work zone and first responder safety before obtaining their intermediate driver’s license. Since its launch, over 63,500 teens have completed the program, which aims to reduce traffic-related fatalities by educating young drivers on navigating work zones and responding to roadside emergencies safely. Additionally, ODOT offers hands-on, in-person safety education, reaching over 22,000 participants since 2021. Oklahoma leads the nation in requiring such training, with other states following suit.
