Oklahoma First in Nation to Require Work Zone Safety Course for Teen Drivers
Abstract:Oklahoma has implemented a pioneering law requiring teen drivers to complete an online course on work zone safety and first responder safety before obtaining their intermediate driver license. This initiative, effective from November 1, 2023, aims to mitigate the alarming rates of car crashes involving young drivers, with particular emphasis on the hazards posed by work zones and the importance of yielding to first responders. Developed in collaboration with state agencies and safety organizations, the program, known as Work Zone Safe, educates teens on safe driving practices, emphasizing the need for focus and vigilance while behind the wheel. Through a combination of online modules and hands-on educational experiences, Work Zone Safe aims to instill responsible driving habits and raise awareness about the consequences of reckless driving.
