Oregon Transportation Agency Can Do More to Make Work Zones Safer, Audit Finds

Author/Presenter: Withycombe, Claire
Abstract:

On average there are 488 crashes and five deaths in road work zones in Oregon every year. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has taken steps to make work zones safer, such as conducting a biennial safety review with the federal government and inspecting work zones every day to evaluate whether they meet requirements laid out in traffic control plans. However, auditors found that ODOT could do more to keep workers, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians safe in road work zones by standardizing some processes.
