PennDOT Launches Contest for High Schoolers to Tackle Work Zone Safety Using AI
Author/Presenter: Thompson, IanAbstract:
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has launched the ninth annual PennDOT Innovations Challenge, inviting high school students statewide to propose artificial intelligence (AI) solutions that enhance safety in highway work zones. Open to students in grades 9–12 from all types of schools, the competition aims to foster creativity, problem-solving, and strategic thinking in addressing real-world transportation challenges. For the 2026 contest, participants must develop AI-based concepts that improve protection for both road crews and motorists, while considering cost, statewide implementation, and public outreach. Regional winners will present their proposals before PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll and a panel of judges, who will select a statewide champion to receive a monetary award sponsored by several transportation organizations. Submissions are due January 30, 2026, with results to be announced later on the Innovations Challenge webpage.
