PennDOT, Pennsylvania State Police Announce ‘Operation Yellow Jacket’ Speed Enforcement in Highway Work Zones
Abstract:The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), and the Highway Safety Network have launched Operation Yellow Jacket in District 2 work zones to improve highway safety. The initiative places troopers in PennDOT vehicles to observe and report speeding, tailgating, and distracted driving violations, which are then enforced by marked PSP patrol units. Designed to reduce crashes and fatalities, the program emphasizes deterrence rather than ticketing, highlighting the importance of safe driving behaviors in work zones. In 2024, Pennsylvania recorded 1,250 work zone crashes, resulting in 22 fatalities and 785 injuries, underscoring the need for stronger enforcement and public awareness.
